DEREK B. CUNDIFF, AIA, RBEC
Derek is experienced with all phases of the construction design process from Schematic Design through Construction Administration. The fundamental component of Derek's work is the assertion that it is preferable to maintain a community's built environment, finding within it a new purpose and usefulness, rather than continuing a short-sighted cycle of construction, using-up, and eventually abandoning cheaply built and quickly antiquated structures. Often, this approach leads to more cost effective design solutions and buildings that enable a community to remain grounded in its past while making the changes necessary for the future.
In addition to being a Registered Architect in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Derek is a Registered Roof Consultant (RRC), Registered Waterproofing Consultant (RWC), Registered Exterior Wall Consultant (REWC) and Registered Building Envelope Consultant (RBEC) accredited through RCI, Inc. (formerly Roof Consultants Institute). He assists building Owners manage and maintain the watertight integrity of their collective building envelope systems, the most important building assets and components, through initial system surveys and reports, design, Construction Administration, and inspection.
A majority of his work has involved the renovation and restoration of buildings of local importance and historical significance with an emphasis on restoring the building’s watertight integrity while maintaining existing building character. These projects often require extensive consideration of issues related to building codes, the requirements of government funding and review entities, and previous methods and means of construction.
In his spare time, Derek enjoys time working on various building and art projects on Bent Mountain and travelling with his wife, children, and friends.
